A Monument for The Abraham Lincoln Brigade Vandalized
Two weeks ago a monument for the Abraham Lincoln Brigade was vandalized . The Abraham Lincoln Brigade was composed of American volunteers who went to Spain to fight the Fascists army under Franco. Many of the members of the ALB were affiliated with the US Communist Party and were influenced by and supportive of the communist regime in Russia under Josef Stalin.
The words “Viva Durruti Y Orwell” were grafittied on the artwork in reference to Buenaventura Durruti and George Orwell who opposed the republican army that the Lincoln brigade was part of. In a statement posted on this site, the Worker Memorial Project wrote that the “The revolutionary movement in Spain was defeated by a counter-revolution spearheaded by the Stalinist Soviet Union and it's global puppets and public relations hacks”, and that “the Abraham Lincoln Battalion, the US dupes of and cannon fodder for the Stalinist counter-revolution in Spain from 1936 to 1939.”
But many have responded with opposition to the act, some writing that there are other places in the financial district of San Francisco that would be more appropriate to graffiti, and others suggested that handing out fliers would be a better act.
